What to use instead of Styrofoam? Thermal insulating paint – how to choose it?
Table of Contents
One of the most frequently used methods of insulating the walls of a building is the use of polystyrene, popularly called Styrofoam. Although it has many advantages, it is not always possible to put it on the wall. Are you wondering if there are other methods of thermal insulation? Such a solution is, for example, a coating or thermal insulation paint. In the article, we will write a few words about the paint, answer the question whether it can be used with Styrofoam and what types of paint are available. We invite you to read.
What is a thermal insulation coating?
Thermal insulation paint is a specialized product that has thermal insulation properties. Its properties are related to the ability to reflect thermal radiation, which is why they are also called coatings or reflective paints. The ingredient that allows you to do this is the so-called glass microspheres. They have a negative pressure close to a vacuum, which increases thermal resistance. A detailed description of how our paints work can be found here.
When to use thermal insulation paint?
Below we present three situations in which thermal insulation paint is often used as thermal insulation.
1. Can thermal insulation paint be used instead of polystyrene? It is possible, although it is much better to use polystyrene with a thermal insulation coating. What good will it do? First of all, it will allow the use of thinner polystyrene, which will affect the purchase and installation costs.
2. There are many buildings in which Styrofoam cannot be used. We are talking here, for example, about buildings entered into the register of monuments. Many conservators do not agree to insulation using polystyrene boards. However, there is a way. The ideal solution is thermal insulating paint. It does not interfere with the appearance of the building, but adds a solid insulating layer.
3. When we want to insulate the interior. It may happen that we want to insulate the room from the inside. For example, when we do not want to destroy the current façade. Of course, it is possible to install Styrofoam from the inside, but it will simply make the insulated room smaller. In such a situation, it is much better to use a thermal insulating paint that has similar properties and at the same time does not affect the volume of the room. (More about the applications of the coating inside can be found in the article –> How to insulate a house and apartment from the inside? Internal thermal insulation paint)
The above points show that GoTherm® can be called an insulating paint.
What thickness of thermal insulation paint should be applied?
This of course depends on the effect you want to achieve. Based on research and experience, it is considered that 1 mm of GoTherm® thermal insulation paint applied to the surface corresponds toapprox. 6 cm of Styrofoam, while 1 mm of the AT coating Termo® is approximately 10cm of Styrofoam

What other properties does thermal insulation paint have?
Of course, facade insulation is not the only place where thermal insulation paints can be used. Reflective coatings can protect against burns. A good example is the insulation of hot pipes or boilers in industrial plants.
Research shows that GoTherm® painthelp in the fight against fungus and mold. And it also allows you to eliminate bacteria eries from the surfaces she painted.
What paint can replace polystyrene?
One of the paints we produce works great in replacing or helping polystyrene with thermal insulation. It is GoTherm®. It can be used on various surfaces such as concrete, plaster, metal, wood and even plastic (except polyethylene).
GoTherm®thermal insulation paint is resistant to weather conditions and reflects up to 90% of infrared solar radiation. As for color, the basic paint is white. With the help of special pigments you can change its color. From the end of 2022, our thermal insulation paints are available in colors!(We recommend an article about it what color to paint the walls).
Importantly, the paint can be used both outside and inside the building.
It is worth emphasizing that the product is ecological and safe for health. In addition, the thermal insulation paint is also prepared for various application methods. Thus, paint in the form of a thick mass can be spread similarly to gypsum plaster, and its appropriate dilution allows the use of a painting unit. Of course, there is also a version with a consistency similar to traditional paints, which is perfect for applying with a roller and/or brush.
In the case of deeper cracks and defects, it is worth strengthening the sealing insulation with a mass in a cartridge, designed especially for construction – GoTherm® Seal. It is resistant to weather conditions and effectively isolates thermal bridges. The mass can be used to fill expansion joints, seal around windows and doors, provide thermal insulation and mask mounting pins in Styrofoam.
What to use instead of polystyrene – warming thermal insulation paint
As we have shown, instead of polystyrene, in certain situations it is possible and worth using GoTherm® paint.

How much thermal insulation paint do you need?
To calculate the amount of paint needed, we have created a special calculator. It is easy to use. All you need to do is specify what problem you want to solve, the dimensions of the walls you want to paint and their surface. You also need to indicate what method you plan to apply the paint. After entering all the data, the calculator will calculate the amount of paint needed.
